Best practices for... How To Move From Feedburner to Digesto

Now that you have registered for Digesto, you need to migrate your existing RSS email list over to Marketo. Once setup, Digesto will send your existing subscribers all the delicious content they crave from you.

But first, we need to make sure you retain any email subscribers who are using your Feedburner account for email delivery instead of RSS delivery. Keeping your email list on Feedburner is a bad idea because if Google ever shuts down Feedburner, you will lose those valuable email addresses. You should also move your email list to Marketo because you will be able to properly manage your list as well as fully track all lead behaviors.

Timing: We recommend deactivating Feedburner AFTER you have your Digesto setup completed, but BEFORE activating your Digest (or sending your first email) to avoid service interruption.

Step 1: Visit Feedburner

You probably haven’t been here in awhile. The nice thing is Google has let Feedburner run quietly in the background.

Step 2: Enter the Feed You Wish to Edit

Feedburner may allow you to export the list in a CSV file. If you do not see this option, use our Feedblitz workaround (below). The file contains opted-in emails for your blog only.

Step 3: Deactivate Your Email Sign Up in Feedburner

Prerequisites:
Marketo program and Digest are configured and tested. Should happen before you activate your new Digest to avoid overlap.

How to:
Once you’ve collected your email addresses, be sure to Deactivate your email collector in Feedburner so no one signs up here again.

Step 4: Prepare the CSV file for Importing to Marketo

Prerequisite:
1) Feedburner subscription form "embed code" has been removed from your website.
2) New blog subscription (Marketo) form is live on your website.

Now that you have the emails, be sure to setup a file that looks similar to this. Your exact blog subscribe field will be different. It is ok if you do not have their names, you can just use Email Address and Blog Subscription.

Remember, Marketo will automatically dedupe by email address, so if an existing record happened to be subscribed via Feedburner, they will now be subscribed in Marketo.

Step 5: Import Leads as a New List in Marketo

Call this list “YYYY-MM-DD-Blog Subscribers from Feedburner” so you know the date and origin of these records. They will be marked as Blog Subscriber=TRUE and will automatically show up in your Digesto Smart List.

OPTIONAL: Our Special Feedblitz Workaround

It is possible that you will be unable to pull the email list from Feedburner. (e.g.: you lost the login or there was a technical problem).

You should be wary of continuing to use Feedburner because Google unexpectedly discontinued GoogleReader in 2013 and many people expect Google to eventually turn offon Feedburner. Instead, switch your RSS to Feedblitz or the default RSS in your system.

The upshot of using Feedblitz is they allow you to import your Feedburner email list automatically. Once you get it into Feedblitz, download the file and follow Steps 4-5 above. Then turn off your Feedblitz email subscription.
